Testimonials

The e-centre has provided the support resources and advice that have helped me to develop Cantovation into a viable business. Also, through the networking opportunities provided by the e-centre ecosystem, I have been able to strengthen the business by building alliances with other entrepreneurs associated with the e-centre.

DHI is an internationally recognised company specialising in applied research, software development and consultancy services in all fields related to the water environment. In seeking to establish a New Zealand office in 2004, DHI was fortunate to be invited to the Massey University business incubator in Albany. The e-centre office and support facilities, including high speed internet, shared meeting and training rooms, have proved to be of enormous value to DHI. As DHI New Zealand has grown, we have moved offices three times whilst remaining within the e-Centre environment and so avoiding the major disruptions this would usually entail. DHI have benefited from the close connections to the Massey University academic departments and are pursing a number of opportunities in joint software development and research.

Black Dog Solutions started at the e-centre just nine months ago, building customised web-based software applications for the ever-growing small to medium business market. We approached Massey University, e-centre as we knew we needed help to grow to planned rates and had heard through the University grapevine that they offered great support and an encouraging environment for new IT businesses looking to export.

I am happy to say that what we heard is true. Thanks to the continued support of the experienced staff here at the e-centre, Black Dog have grown from a one man band to having six staff and sustained turn-over – all without investment or debt. From the professional offices and facilities provided, to legal, accounting and planning advice, I can definitely say that the e-centre has been integral to the success of Black Dog

BioDiesel Oils (NZ) Ltd is a resident in the e-centre Massey University Albany Auckland.

The company is a take-off-phase SME and manufactures biodiesel in a commercial plant based at East Tamaki Auckland with a second plant under construction at Waharoa.

The benefits of co- location by the company at the e-centre can be listed:

1. Access to advisors and consultants having a wide range of competencies. This includes central and local Government officials and their Ministries.

2. Direct linkages to Massey University academic staff and research groups both on the Albany campus and the Palmerston North campus.

3. Professional advice and assistance on small business “economics” and investment matters both from e Centre executive management and from other residents.

4. Being in a location where all businesses share common issues – the facility is such whereby communication between residents is easily facilitated and shared experiences and advice readily achieved. Many issues faced by any one resident will, more often than not, have been successfully addressed by others and the e-centre environment is such whereby the sharing of such information is encouraged.

5. Exposure to industry events, not normally available or known about.

6. Alerts to key items of information that may affect the business sector in New Zealand provided on a regular basis as also up to date provision of key journals, bulletins, newspapers etc

7. The chance to meet general visitors to the centre as and when appropriate and as a result, expand net working opportunities.

8. To have a physical address linked to a major New Zealand and globally recognised University offers credibility to any SME resident company.

9. Impartial advice and second opinions from e-centre executive management on issues that may arise for a resident company individual.

10. Infrastructural and administration matters such as meeting room availability, amenities, audio visual equipment, reception areas, photocopying, faxing, Internet broadband connections, ablution facilities, telephones, visitor reception, car parks etc are all on site, readily available and well maintained.

11. The e-centre can hold Conferences and events – catering and other infrastructural requirements are well established for such occasions.

12. Favourable rental charges compared to equivalent office space elsewhere in Auckland. Maintenance of IT equipment and general facilities is to a very high standard as is the overall hygiene, cleaning and sanitation of the facility.

13. Access to Massey University Albany campus facilities such as the cafeteria, library, medical centre etc.

14. Easy access from the Northern Motorway and car parking for visitors – an extremely important aspect for anyone running a business in Auckland.

15. First time visitors to the e-centre are exposed to a functional, modern and busy environment from the time they arrive – first impressions can often be important in ensuring successful outcomes for resident companies.

Information Logistics

The value of the e-centre is the 'people' within providing an environment which is conclusive to 'thinking'.

This environment with its unique mix of programming skills and business talent provides a combined knowledge pool capable of testing and evaluating any idea or product, combined with support to share strategies to successfully take these products to market.

The e-centre also requires a business model that is honest and true, there are a very few 'instant products'. The battle to get 'market identity' and a share thereof can be dependant on the target market selected. The ability to evaluate and measure these markets is a learnt skill. Building a relationship with these markets and the people within takes time. We entered the market as an ‘unknown’ with version 1 of the Infolog System. We are now building version 3 based on client feedback.

We are now recognised as providing a quality product and our clients are now our best salesmen. We thank the 'e-centre' and 'tenants' for the guidance provided while we look forward to rolling out ‘Infolog 3’ in 2008. It is this refined version which has the potential to become an international product.

The e-centre environment has really helped our business from the sharing of staff to the ability to brain pick “experts” within the complex. The physical environment and helpful friendly staff and tenants along with interaction with the university has proved invaluable.

From introducing potential partners to assisting with grant applications and accessing training, the e-centre offers growing businesses a great deal of help and assistance and has accelerated our growth from 4 staff to 10 in a period of under 6 months.

QLBS.com
The e-centre is a very pleasant place to welcome our clients and its excellent facilities make it convenient and economical for us to run training and consulting workshops. We also value the bright and airy, open-plan offices; the location where most of us can avoid the central city traffic; Steve’s (e-centre CEO) input into our business. We have made many important links with other businesses and Steve provides excellent networking opportunities through linking us with parties he meets who he thinks have relevance for us. We have had a lot of value also from linking up with researchers from the University.

Very early in our stay, Steve Corbett linked us with Kevin Riley and Mike Watson who are part of the New Zealand Business Foundation. We formed a Strategic Alliance with NZBEF which has been functioning successfully for 3 years and has raised the profile of Quantel considerably, as well as providing a clear market niche in the Baldrige excellence framework.

We have also been linked with EDX, a business advisory and accountancy firm, which has been key to assisting us to implement good administration and financial systems and providing excellent support and business advice. EDX were instrumental in planning funding requirements and negotiating successful capital raising, which has been critical to our success. Our legal services have been provided by Genevieve Gill, also recommended by Steve, and feedback from other e-centre tenants who also use her services confirm she is an excellent legal advisor. She has formed an integral part of our (outsourced) team and contributed invaluable insights through her IT business experience.

Additionally, Steve arranged for a series of sessions with an ex Microsoft Manager from USA who had launched Excel and who affirmed that we had a high value niche proposition and assisted greatly with overall pricing strategy.

There have been a number of initiatives, including CEO networking, leadership development programmes, marketing programmes that have all helped in many ways.

Recently Steve has linked us with researchers who are interested to publish papers about our work, which is of major benefit to us.
Steve has provided mentoring in the form of quarterly meetings to review the business operationally, tactically and strategically. Most importantly Steve has always maintained an open door policy and has been very available for discussions on an as needed basis.
The e-centre has provided and initiated the stimulus for many excellent growth experiences for Quantel.

The e-centre and Massey University have also become our own valued clients
