Mobile Computing
New Zealand consumers have been quick to adopt mobile phones for communication but will they be prepared to use their mobile devices to
make payments for goods and services?
This is one of the questions being addressed by research at a new
Research Centre. MasseyUniversity has recently established the Centre
for Mobile Computing at the Auckland campus at Albany. Professor Tony
Norris is the Director of the Centre and he has research interests in
mobile health. The Centre is also undertaking research in m-commerce
and m-learning.
The e-centre has been assisting the establishment of the Centre by
linking it to industry through a series of events. Over 40 companies
attended the event Mobile Payment Solutions, held at Microsoft House
in conjunction with Connect New Zealand, where Prof Dennis Viehland of presented research on mobile payment solutions. A seminar
on mobile health was held at the e-centre in April. For more

Innovation at MasseyUniversity and e-centre
A competition for the best new business idea is one of the initiatives
planned by a new team at Massey. The e-centre is championing and
facilitating a new team of Massey staff, the Innovation Team, to foster innovation at the Auckland campus. The Team will meet bimonthly to
share information about commercial opportunities and industry linkages
and to plan and implement new initiatives to generate awareness of
innovation and commercialisation on the campus.
The next event will be a presentation by the Director of each Research
Centre of their innovation plans.
